How The Success Of 3 Artists Came From The Small Steps In The Beginning
Reflections on the Long Game in Art
In the creative world, it’s often not about instant results but the long game. Over time, every small action, every conversation, and every connection compounds. What seemed minor years ago often turns out to be pivotal. This week, I was reminded of that truth in the most wonderful way.
Catching Up With Old Friends
I recently met two extraordinary friends – Sharon Griffin, a figurative ceramic sculptor, and Meg Hawkins, an artist with decades in the creative industries. We met in Ironbridge, UK, for coffee and cake – the perfect setting for reflection. Sharon and I have shared this long journey for over ten years, while Meg has been developing her practice for twelve plus years.
Our conversation was a reminder of the journey we’ve all taken: the missteps, the lessons, and the small, unassuming moments that ultimately shaped who we’ve become.
10 Years of United Art Space
This April marks the 10th anniversary of United Art Space. To celebrate, we’re hosting an all-day event in Shropshire on 17 April. We’ll have talks, group discussions, Q&A sessions, informal art-making, and a chance to reconnect with your creativity in a relaxed environment.
Sharon, Meg, and I will share insights into our creative journeys, the mistakes we’ve made, and how our art has evolved alongside our lives. We’ll also explore how creativity fuels everything we do, from running United Art Space to connecting with other artists.
The Value of Relationships
One key insight from our meeting was the power of relationships. Sharon’s international success began with a single conversation with a photographer. Meg’s licensing deals and collaborations started with small connections. And my biggest business successes stemmed from mentorship, guidance, and networking with people who inspired and supported me.
Even when things feel stagnant or uncertain, these small connections are slowly building the bigger picture. The long game isn’t glamorous, but it is transformative.
Keep Going, One Step at a Time
So, this is your reminder: keep taking micro-steps. Reach out to someone new, experiment with your art, or simply continue showing up. Every small action contributes to your creative journey.
Join us on 17 April to explore this further, reflect on your own long game, and connect with fellow artists. Together, we’ll celebrate the journey, the lessons, and the incredible possibilities that unfold over time.
Remember: the long game is where the magic really happens.
