As creatives, many of us find it hard to stop. We love our work, so it doesn’t feel like work until the spinning head, the overwhelm, the exhaustion kick in. I know it well. And I’ve learnt that pushing through only makes it worse.

Learning From Burnout

I used to believe I couldn’t afford to take time off. But after years of burning out, I realised I couldn’t afford not to. Now, I treat rest as essential. It’s not indulgence, it’s maintenance.

Making Space

Taking time off doesn’t have to be big or expensive. Sometimes it’s a day with the children, a walk in nature, or two quiet hours under a tree with a notebook. Other times, it’s a proper holiday. What matters is that it’s deliberate – giving yourself permission to stop.

Coming Back Gently

One of the hardest parts is the return. If you’re like me, easing back in with simple tasks helps. Tidying, clearing the inbox, or sketching a tiny square to warm up. Step by step, you find your rhythm again.

Rest Is Creative Fuel

When we slow down, we notice more. We reconnect with why we create in the first place. Rest isn’t separate from our goals – it’s part of reaching them. Slowing down is what helps us speed up in the long run.
