3 Ways to Make 1 Million As An Artist – Break Through Your Limits
Today I want to talk about something that might feel impossible to some: making a million as an artist.
For many people I speak to, this number feels out of reach — not even on the radar. But I’m here to gently challenge that thinking. Whether it’s in pounds, dollars or euros, this goal is absolutely possible, and more importantly, it’s about more than just the money.
So let’s unpack this topic—not because a million defines success, but because of who you become on the journey.
Why Talk About £1 Million?
Let’s be clear — this isn’t about success being defined by a number. A million pounds doesn’t automatically mean you’re “successful”. And honestly, I don’t always enjoy those money-focused conversations where a person is reduced to their income. It’s so much more than that, isn’t it?
But I’m also fascinated by people who have achieved it—because of the mindset, the story, the impact, and the ripple effect it creates. I’ve seen artists reach a million in two to three years. It takes a certain kind of drive, yes—but it’s not reserved for the wealthy, well-connected or “clever”.
It’s for anyone who dares to believe it’s possible.
What This Journey Has Meant for Me
Coming from a council estate, this goal once felt absurd. But my curiosity led me to explore it, play with the idea, and surround myself with others doing it. I’ve now passed the £1 million mark overall in my business, and while I haven’t done it in one year yet — I know it’s possible for me.
What’s really surprised me is how much this goal has expanded me — my mindset, the books I read, the people I connect with, and the projects I now dream about. Even if I never hit that exact milestone in a single year, the person I’ve become along the way is worth more than gold.
Step 1: Sell Your Art at a Premium
Yes, it’s possible to make a million through art sales alone. There are artists selling individual pieces for tens of thousands — and collectors willing to pay that.
But here’s the reality: it takes time. You need to develop your practice, build a name, and place yourself in the right circles. Networking, connections, and reputation all play a part. It’s the long game.
This path isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay — but if it excites you, study the artists who’ve done it. Learn how they did it and who they surrounded themselves with. If they can do it, so can you.
Step 2: License Your Artwork
Licensing is one of the most scalable and sustainable ways to make money from your art. Instead of selling an original once, you license it to be used on products—and receive royalties in return.
My friend Maria Brophy and her husband Drew are the go-to people on this. They’ve made millions over the years through licensing alone. She has a super course we are a proud affiliate of, you can click on the link to learn more:
This route allows you to earn passively while you sleep, removing that ceiling that many artists hit when trading time for money. It does take time to learn the licensing world, but once you’re in — it’s powerful.
Step 3: Create a Membership, Teach or Offer Courses
This is my favourite — and the path I chose.
You don’t need qualifications, a big following or to even leave your house. That’s the beauty of it. Through a membership or online course, you can create regular, scalable income — and it can grow with you.
Your audience might pay monthly to learn from you, access your community, or receive exclusive content or artwork. It could be teaching your techniques, mentoring, or creating a space where people just feel connected.
This is how United ArtSpace started for me. Ten years ago, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, and I had all the fears — what if I hate it? What if I give bad advice? What if I’m no good at this?
But I grew into it, and it’s now my passion. It’s connected me to my art in new ways, helped me find my voice, and made an impact I never imagined. I’ve seen artists who are tired from markets and undercharging finally flourish when they lean into teaching or memberships. Some are sitting on gold mines and just need to take the first step.
Final Thoughts: It’s Not Just a Number
Whether you aim for a million or not, I want you to know — it’s possible. It’s not reserved for the elite or the “lucky”. But it does require work, self-reflection and resilience.
If it’s something you feel called to explore, don’t write it off. Plant the seed. Take a step. It might take time — it took me four years to start earning from my membership — but I’m still here, still learning, and more inspired than ever.
If you’d like to learn more, I’ve got a secret workshop coming up where I’ll share the behind-the-scenes of my own membership journey. Keep an eye on your inbox.
And remember — this is available to you, if you want it.
Take care, my friends.
