How do I move from feeling lost and disconnected to knowing exactly what to work on next?

Whether it’s the next piece of art or a larger life project, this feeling is familiar to many of us.

I’ve experienced it myself – both on a small scale, like finishing a piece of artwork, and on a large scale, such as developing the Creative Living platform. Over the last 20 years in the creative industries, I’ve launched courses, written books, and created platforms, and I’ve seen how common it is to feel stuck at certain points.

The Power of Desire

The key, I’ve found, is the desire to create. The why behind what we do: the curiosity, the drive, is where our most meaningful work emerges. Often, we lose touch with this, producing work we’re not connected to, or mimicking others because we don’t know our own path.

Notice the stirrings inside you – the pull to something new, even if it’s unclear. It can feel daunting, but this awareness is the first step toward clarity.

Delve and Shelve: Looking Back to Move Forward

Creating space is essential. I often reflect on past work to understand what to carry forward and what to leave behind. We call this Delve and Shelve. On a micro level, it’s reviewing individual artworks. On a macro level, it’s reflecting on bigger projects, life choices, and how we want to feel in the coming years.

Ask yourself: What parts of my past work brought me joy? What habits, techniques, or routines no longer serve me? How do I want to spend my days moving forward?

Planting Seeds, Asking Questions

When building larger projects, I begin by asking questions rather than rushing for answers: How do I want to show up? What life do I want to lead? What creative environment nourishes me? The answers often emerge gradually as seeds planted in reflection, not as fully-formed ideas.

This approach has guided everything I’ve created – from United Art Space to Creative Living. It isn’t about the end result; it’s about alignment, connection, and living a life that reflects your creativity and values.

Trust and Community

Uncertainty is a natural part of the creative journey. Sitting in it, trusting your intuition, and letting ideas unfold in their own time is vital. Equally important is connecting with others: co-creation, feedback, and community provide inspiration and guidance that refine your next steps.

Ultimately, clarity comes from a mix of internal reflection and external connection. Delve into your past work, plant seeds for the future, trust the process, and connect with others. Step by step, this leads to clarity, purpose, and the next chapter in your creative journey.
