Reflecting Back on 2024: How to Design Your Best Year Yet

Welcome to the beginning of your next chapter. As we step into 2025, it’s essential to pause, reflect, and set intentions for the year ahead. Designing your life is not about grand gestures or overnight transformations. It’s about small, deliberate choices that shape the life you want to live five years from now. Let’s begin by reflecting on 2024, identifying what worked, what didn’t, and how we can move forward with clarity and purpose.

Why Reflecting Matters

As Steve Jobs famously said, “You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” Reflection allows us to connect those dots, giving insight into how our experiences shape who we are today. It’s easy to rush into the next goal without recognising the lessons we’ve already learned.

In this session, we reflect on the past year—both the joyful moments and the challenging ones. This is your chance to ask yourself:

  • What filled your heart with joy?
  • What felt heavy or unfulfilling?
  • What have you achieved that deserves celebration?

Creating a Timeline of Your Year

Grab a piece of paper, a notebook, or even your phone. Sketch out a simple timeline from January to December 2024. Begin filling in key events, achievements, and moments that stood out.

Look through your photos, journals, or social media posts to jog your memory. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ve accomplished, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

For example, you might realise that:

  • You took a leap of faith and started a new venture.
  • You reconnected with a childhood hobby.
  • You overcame a significant challenge.

It’s not about perfection—it’s about acknowledging progress.

Recognising Your Joyful Moments

Ask yourself, “What brought me the most joy in 2024?” For some, it could be a career milestone or a personal achievement. For others, it might be something as simple as rediscovering a hobby or spending quality time with loved ones.

For me, one of the happiest moments was standing on stage at my book launch, surrounded by friends and family. It was a culmination of years of hard work, and seeing it come to life was truly magical.

Think about your own joyful moments and why they mattered to you. These insights help us understand what we want more of in the future.

Acknowledging Challenges and Disappointments

Reflection isn’t just about the positives. It’s also important to acknowledge what didn’t go as planned. What were your biggest challenges in 2024? What disappointments did you experience?

For me, one of the toughest moments was navigating the process of writing and launching my book. As someone with dyslexia, writing doesn’t come naturally, and I found myself doubting whether I should be writing at all. But I pushed through, and that perseverance paid off.

Think about your own challenges. How did you overcome them? What did you learn from those experiences?

Shifting Your Perspective

After acknowledging your challenges, take a moment to reflect on what you feel fortunate for despite those difficulties. For example:

  • “Even though I faced criticism, I feel fortunate for the growth it brought.”
  • “Even though I struggled with self-doubt, I’m grateful for the support I received.”

This shift in perspective helps us recognise our resilience and capacity to grow.

Embracing Playfulness and Joy

Sometimes we dismiss hobbies or interests as unimportant. But reconnecting with activities that bring pure joy can be transformative. For me, it was roller skating—a childhood pastime I rediscovered. At first, it seemed trivial compared to more “serious” goals. But the joy it brought reminded me of the importance of play and downtime.

Ask yourself: Is there a hobby or activity you’ve let go of that you could reintroduce into your life? What small joys have you overlooked?

Setting Intentions for 2025

As we move forward, take time to consider:

  • What do you want to continue doing?
  • What do you want to leave behind?
  • What new habits or projects will bring you closer to your ideal life?

Designing your life isn’t about achieving perfection. It’s about aligning your actions with your values and creating a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

Let’s make 2025 a year of growth, joy, and intention. And remember, it’s not about having everything go perfectly—it’s about learning to navigate whatever comes your way with resilience and grace.

Here’s to your best year yet!
