Embracing the Journey: Rediscovering Your Art and Purpose

In the ever-evolving world of creativity, there’s something deeply empowering about reconnecting with your purpose and passion. It’s not just about selling your art; it’s about understanding why you create in the first place. When you gain that clarity, you ignite a fire within that makes you excited about your work, your process, and sharing it with others.

That excitement is contagious, and it’s where the magic truly begins. This is the core message I explore in my book, Your Art Matters. It’s not just about how to sell your art but about discovering your voice, your purpose, and your audience. When you tap into these elements, you start to connect more deeply with others who resonate with your art. And that’s when the real transformation happens.

Moving Beyond Selling: Expanding Your Creative Income

Many artists get caught in the mindset that their art’s value is tied solely to sales. But the truth is, there are so many other ways to make a living from your creativity. Take me as an example. I run United Art Space, a platform that allows me to live off my creativity, but I don’t sell my art directly. Instead, I use my art to fuel my platform, which opens the door to other avenues of creative income.

This mindset shift is crucial. It allows you to make art on your own terms, free from the pressures of constant selling. There are countless opportunities to use your creativity to benefit others, whether that’s through community projects, working with public spaces, or making art accessible in workplaces. It’s about using your creativity to make a broader impact.

The Power of Connection: Making a Difference Through Your Art

And that’s where the true reward lies: in the connections we make and the impact we have on others. Recently, I shared a video on social media—a heartfelt thank-you from people who were inspired by my book. Their stories remind me of the incredible ripple effect that comes from all of us being part of a community. It’s not just about what I create, but about how we lift each other up.

One of the most touching things is hearing how our platform has given people the confidence to call themselves artists, to reach out to galleries, or to enter competitions—things they never thought they could do before. It’s proof that there is a path for every artist, whether that’s through selling your art, creating alongside another career, or something else entirely.

A Season of Reflection: Returning to the Beginning

As I reflect on my own journey, I find myself in a season of renewal. After a year of intense work on my book—writing, editing, publishing, and marketing—I’m taking a step back. I’m reevaluating everything, from my art to my personal life, and even how my business is structured. It’s a process of going back to the beginning, and it’s incredibly liberating.

This return to the basics is something I’m embracing wholeheartedly. There’s something powerful about seeing the world through beginner’s eyes again. It allows me to explore new possibilities, not just in my art but in all areas of my life. It’s about honoring where I am right now, slowing down, and taking stock of what truly matters.

Embracing Space: Taking Time to Pause

I’ve even scaled back my presence on social media during this reflective phase. Sometimes, it’s necessary to pause and listen to the rhythms of your own life, to step back from the momentum you’ve built, and to take a moment to breathe. It’s okay to take your foot off the pedal and just be present. That’s where I am right now—embracing the space and allowing myself to reflect.

In fact, while recording a recent podcast episode, I randomly opened a page in my book and found words that perfectly aligned with what I was feeling. “Start today. Honor where you are right now. Don’t jump too far ahead.” These words reminded me of the importance of focusing on the next step, no matter how small it may seem. Each step adds to the bigger picture of your creative journey.

Honor Your Journey: One Step at a Time

So, whether you’re just starting out or you’re an established artist looking for a fresh perspective, remember this: it’s okay to go back to the beginning. It’s okay to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with your why. Honor where you are in your journey, and the next step will reveal itself in time. Your art matters—not just for what it brings to you, but for the impact it has on the world around you.
