Why Not Now? Taking Action On Big Dreams
Why Not Now? The Power of Embracing Your Dreams Today
In a recent podcast, I explored the idea of tolerances we set for ourselves—the invisible boundaries we create that shape how we live and what we consider achievable. Often, these boundaries are influenced by the expectations of others or societal norms, limiting our potential and the lives we dare to imagine.
When we live comfortably within those tolerances, we may find it hard to stretch beyond them. Our income, the time we spend on our craft, or even the goals we set—all become benchmarks of what we think is possible. But what if those limitations are self-imposed? What if the big dreams we put on hold for the future could happen sooner—perhaps even right now?
I’ve been reflecting on this deeply as I work with an amazing group in my Seven Key Program, which breaks down the process of achieving our goals. In the early stages, we focus on mindset, asking critical questions about why we do what we do. This fundamental “why” drives what we create, who we create it for, and how we can make the most impact. It’s a journey of exploring curiosity and heart-centered goals, not just in art but in life.
One of the most interesting insights I’ve had recently is the realization that some of my biggest dreams—those I thought would take years to achieve—don’t necessarily have to wait. I found myself thinking, “Why am I giving this dream five years?” Often, we push goals far into the future because they seem too big or scary to tackle right away. But what if we ask ourselves, “Why not now?”
The Mindvalley Dream
One example is my dream of taking my children to Mindvalley University—a summer program focused on mindset and personal growth. For years, I thought, “In five years, I’ll take them.” But then I started to question why I was waiting. I began researching the costs, the location, and even reached out to a friend in Estonia, where the event is held. To my surprise, I discovered he had tickets to the event because he was speaking there! Just like that, what seemed like a far-off dream began to feel possible, even within the next year.
This experience opened my eyes to how often we put dreams on hold, thinking they are too big or too far out of reach. But when we start to break them down, ask questions, and explore what it would take to make them happen now, doors begin to open. That’s exactly what happened with Mindvalley, and it’s now something I can realistically plan for sooner than I imagined.
Taking Action on Big Dreams
This mindset shift has extended into other areas of my life. I’ve always dreamed of hiring a dedicated sales and marketing person for my business, United Art Space. For years, I carried that role myself, thinking it would be too costly to hire someone. But as our business has grown—with podcasts, a magazine, courses, and events—managing it all alone has become overwhelming.
Instead of waiting for the “right time,” I started drafting the job role. I realized that hiring someone for this position could not only alleviate the burden on me but also help grow the business. With the right mindset, I began exploring how to make this dream a reality. I sought out a business coach, started planning how to fund the role, and shifted my thinking from “someday” to “let’s make this happen now.”
Why Not Now?
I’ve been playing with this concept of Why not now? in many aspects of life. Another big dream of mine is taking my children to Bali for a month, where they could attend a summer camp while I soak up the culture. Again, it felt like a far-off fantasy, but I started asking, “Why can’t this happen sooner?” I reached out to friends who’ve been to Bali, explored the logistics, and began to realize that this too could be possible much sooner than I had thought.
It’s funny how we make excuses—whether it’s “the kids are in school” or “I don’t have the funds”—and push our dreams farther into the future. But when we start asking why not now, we find ways to make those dreams possible. Whether it’s reaching out to friends for advice or taking small steps to plan, we bring these distant goals closer to reality.
Embracing the Journey, Not the Outcome
It’s important to remember that the outcome doesn’t always matter as much as the journey. When I set these goals, like hiring a new team member or planning a trip to Bali, I no longer tie my success or happiness to whether they actually happen. Instead, I use them as a direction to guide my actions. If they don’t happen right away, it’s okay. What matters is the progress I make along the way, the connections I build, and the lessons I learn.
That’s the power of dreaming big and taking action, even if the final outcome remains uncertain. It’s about playing with the possibilities and staying open to what unfolds.
What Are You Waiting For?
So, I encourage you to ask yourself: What have you been putting off? Is there a dream you’ve set aside for “someday”? Maybe it’s a big trip, a career move, or a creative project you’ve been too afraid to start. Whatever it is, I challenge you to ask yourself, Why not now? What small steps can you take today to move closer to that dream?
You might be surprised at what’s possible when you stop waiting and start acting. And even if it doesn’t happen right away, the journey is worth it. The act of exploring your dreams, inquiring about possibilities, and taking small steps forward brings you closer to living the life you truly want.
